Our workshop

In March 2007, a digital storytelling workshop was held in Cape Town, facilitated by Amy Hill of the Center for Digital Storytelling. Seven short movies were produced by 7th grade learners in the workshop.

Create video

Creating a short movie version of a digital hero story is not that different from creating a simple version using Soundslides. You will need more time and use different software, but the overall process is the same (writing a script that uses the seven elements of digital storytelling, adding images, recording a voiceover, etc.) See the right-hand panel for examples of digital hero stories as movies.

For now, the toolkit will only point to existing resources to guide anyone wanting to facilitate this with their learners.

Software

Entry-level video editing

iMovie (Mac), Windows Movie Maker (Windows XP and above) and KiNO (GNU/Linux) are all great for entry-level movie making.

Advanced video editing

The following video editing programs are well know, very powerful, each have their own strengths and weaknesses and can be expensive.

Tutorials

See the tutorials section. Many of the links in the Resources section are to sites that cover movie-based digital storytelling in greater detail.
