How to plan, create and share digital hero books
8-10 desktop or laptop computers (PC or Mac) with a minimum of 256 mb of RAM, sound cards, and USB ports. Computers must be set up classroom style, so learners can use them and see the data projector image on the wall.
Microphone(s). You can either record using the internal built-in microphone that comes with the computer or an external microphone that can be plugged into the computer. We STRONGLY recommend you use an external microphone. The sound quality is far superior, and for digital storytelling the ability to clearly hear the voiceover is critical.
There are a number of microphone options. Which you choose depends on your recording needs, your budget, your computer equipment and your comfort with technology. These are the basic options:
A headset microphone is advantageous because a table top microphone, or one you hold in your hand, can be more intimidating for the person recording the voiceover. Also, the distance from the speaker’s mouth to the microphone stays more consistent with a headset microphone. An affordable and good starter option is a headset microphone. Depending on your computer equipment, you will need to connect the microphone to your computer via a USB cable or a 1/8th inch microphone jack.
8-10 sets of earphones for the learners to listen to their voiceovers when creating their story. A good idea is to use headset microphones for this purpose -- learners can listen but also use the same equipment to record audio. Extra sets and several earphones splitters, for teachers to use when assisting, preferred but not required.
Internet access from all learner computers, so that learners can find copyright free images and music on the web (optional).
One or more networked scanners, for scanning photos and other source material.
One or more digital cameras (Tip: the Canon PowerShot
cameras are excellent for affordability, easy of use and photo quality).
One networked printer, for printing scripts, curriculum materials, etc.
Data/LCD projector and speakers, for showing sample movies, projecting tutorials, and screening learners' stories.
Recording room(s) – at least one, and preferably two small, quiet rooms in which to do voiceover recording. As soundproof as possible.
On each computer the following software must be loaded:
